Calvin Coolidge DeVaughn, age 97 of Spring Hill, TN, passed away May 18, 2022 at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Calvin was born on November 4, 1924 in Clanton, Alabama to the late Ocie and Lizzie DeVaughn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Chanda Crawford, three sisters and two brothers. He leaves behind one daughter, Marsha DeVaughn; granddaughter, Christa Crews and six great-grandchildren.
Calvin proudly served as a medic in World War II for the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. He was titled a Pharmacist Mate Class 2, he served from June 5, 1943 – May 7, 1946. He attended medical training in Bainbridge, Maryland and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. After extensive training and education Calvin achieved two graduations. His first was October 22, 1943 graduating with the title Hospital Apprentice and his second graduation was September 20, 1944 obtaining the title of U.S. Naval Hospital Pharmacist Mate. He achieved a rating as high as Pharmacist Mate 2. His ribbons and medals achieved were as follows: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Purple Heart, Honorable Service Pin, Honorable Discharge Pin, and World War II Victor Medal.
Most of Calvin’s service was caring for wounded soldiers being transported in ships known as LST’s. He served on three ships, all of which were involved in the invasion of Normandy, one of the biggest battles of World War II. His tour of duty also included Iwo Jima, France, Guam, and many places he never revealed. Calvin had a kind, caring and nurturing nature that always involved helping others even into his elderly years.
The last six years of his life were spent being loved and cared for by his daughter where they formed a bond like never before. His presence will forever be greatly missed.
Funeral Services honoring Calvin will be held on Friday, June 3, 2022, 12:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Spring Hill Memorial Funeral Home in Spring Hill, TN. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until time of service.
