Kindness, compassion, empathy and love…

These are four of the most important human virtues that often seem in short supply these days. There is no doubt about it – the world would be a much happier place if more people embraced these traits.

However, whenever a person comes along who is guided by the spirit of love and kindness, they serve as a blessing to everyone whose paths they cross.

One such person was Debra (Debbie) Lane Murray. Debbie was called home to Heaven at the age of 68 on Mar. 16, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on Aug. 4, 1957, in Lafayette, TN as the youngest of three children of Billy and Anna Dean Carter. After graduating from Macon County High School, she attended Tennessee Technological University, where she met the love of her life, Rick, with whom she was married for over 48 years. Following her college graduation, Debbie returned to teach English in Macon County for the next 30 years.

Throughout her life, Debbie never met a person whom she did not treat with kindness and love. Whether an individual was a friend, family member or stranger, it did not make a difference to Debbie. If that person was hurting, Debbie was at his or her side, giving boundless comfort and solace. Any suffering soul who gazed into her warm and caring countenance came away knowing that everything would be alright.

All her life, Debbie cherished her family, sharing a closeness and love that bound then together through both good times and bad. She loved the small things in life, and she was particularly passionate about sports, including the Macon County Tigers, the Tennessee Vols, the Nashville Predators, the Indiana Fever and the Washington Commanders. In high school, Debbie played basketball, and she was a member of the first Macon County Tigerettes team to play in a state tournament.

Debbie was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents, her oldest brother Billy “Skipper” Carter (wife Jean) and several other extended family members. She is survived by her loving husband Rick, devoted twin sons Matthew and Andrew, brother Gerald “Rusty” Carter (wife Sondra), niece Megan (husband Mickey, children Carleigh, Peyton), nephew Alex (wife Kortnee, children Knox, Kynlee) and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation for Debbie will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Mar. 19 at Sumner Funeral and Cremation Lakeside, followed by a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 20 at Hendersonville Memory Gardens. In addition, there will be a celebration of life event for Debbie at Bagsby Ranch from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on May 17. As Debbie would have it, the celebration will be a “come as you are” event. Instead of an ornate occasion, the celebration will focus on what is important – a life well-lived amongst family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends and acquaintances consider donating to the Nashville Predators Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was near and dear to Debbie’s heart. Donations can be made via the link on the Sumner Funeral and Cremation website or on the Nashville Predators Foundation website.
