Dorothy May Beckett Horrocks
July 10, 1938 – October 29, 2025
Dorothy May Beckett Horrocks went on to her eternal rest on October 29, 2025. Born on July 10, 1938, in Swedesboro, New Jersey, to George and Sarah Beckett, Dottie leaves behind a legacy of laughter, compassion, and unwavering devotion that touched the hearts of all who knew her.
Known affectionately by many names — “Dot,” “Dottie,” “Mom,” “Grandma,” “Aunt Dot,” and more — she had an incredible sense of humor and a gift for bringing joy to those around her. Her quick wit, expressive nature, and infectious laughter could light up any room.
In 1953, Dottie and her family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1956. Following graduation, she held several roles — including teacher, waitress, and insurance clerk — before beginning a distinguished career at the Fort Lauderdale News / Sun-Sentinel. Over nearly three decades, she built lasting friendships and earned numerous awards for her dedication and professionalism. It was there that she met the love of her life, Alan Horrocks, who would become her husband and devoted partner for more than 50 years. Together, they raised six children and built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and countless memories.
Dot’s circle of friendship extended far and wide, but her closest group — affectionately known as the “High Hampton Gang” — shared a bond that lasted decades. Their annual golf trips to High Hampton Inn & Country Club in Cashiers, North Carolina, were a cherished tradition filled with laughter, a few bogies, and a lifetime of memories.
Of all her accomplishments, Dottie was proudest of her family. She was a loving mother to six children, a proud grandmother to fifteen, and a doting great-grandmother to sixteen. Her nurturing love shaped generations and will continue to guide them all the days of their lives.
An accomplished painter, Dottie shared her artistic talents with those she loved most — gifting hand-painted gifts and cherished pieces that now serve as treasured keepsakes. She was an avid golfer who delighted in sharing her love for the game with her grandchildren (when she wasn’t at the ballfields cheering them on as they played baseball).
Dottie was preceded in death by her parents George and Sarah Beckett, along with her beloved sons: James “Fendley” Irby and Mark Irby. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Alan, their children: Craig Irby (Michelle), Celia Wetherington, Tom Irby (Karen), Rosemary Baker (Tamer), fifteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, sisters Lela Kelly and Camille Ulrich (Dave), and numerous loved ones. She will be forever cherished for her warmth, humor, and the love she poured into everyone she met.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. from the Chapel of Sumner Funeral & Cremation Lakeside. Visitation with the family will be from 1:30 P.M. until time of service.
