John Richard Houdeshell, age 84 of Gallatin, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2023. John was born on January 25, 1939 in Old Hickory, Tennessee to the late Franklin Eugene Houdeshell and the late Daisy Midgett Houdeshell.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his son, John Richard Houdeshell, Jr. and his sister, Marie Stewart of Houston, Texas.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charlotte Boyers Houdeshell; children, James Michael Houdeshell (Jennifer), Joseph Scott Houdeshell (Erin), and Jennifer Houdeshell Cherry. John was a beloved Papaw to his grandchildren, Holly Houdeshell, Nina Houdeshell, Drew Houdeshell, Colin Houdeshell, Trevor Houdeshell (Angel), Brett Houdeshell, Parker Felks, and John Michael Cochran (Jaclyn). He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Galas of Chattanooga.
John was a 1957 graduate of Dupont High School and a 1961 graduate of Middle Tennessee State College; he owned 9 Firestone and Goodyear stores in the Middle Tennessee area for many years, a tradition passed on to his sons. John was an avid golfer, playing for many years at Bluegrass and Fairvue locally, and Hombre and Sharks Tooth in Florida. He and Charlotte enjoyed traveling all over the world together and to their second home in Panama City Beach for the past 40 years. John was a member of Hendersonville First United Methodist Church and attended Woodlawn Methodist when in Florida.
A Celebration of John’s Life will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 at 12:00 P.M. in the Chapel at Sumner Funeral & Cremation Lakeside with Pastor Philip Smith officiating. Visitation with the family will be for one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or at a later date to a golf scholarship being established in John’s name at MTSU.
