Harland
October 3, 1942 – June 5, 2026
Sumner Funeral & Cremation Lakeside
4:00 - 6:00 pm (Central time)
Leif Eyvind Harland passed away peacefully at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy of strength, devotion, and quiet perseverance. Born on October 3, 1942, in Stockholm, Sweden to Ingrid and Eyvind Harland, Leif embarked on a remarkable journey immigrating to the United States at just 18 years old. Leaving behind the familiarity of home and family, he arrived in America with only a suitcase and began building the life that would become his proudest accomplishment. He embraced his adopted country with gratitude and determination, proudly becoming a United States citizen in 1968
Leif served with honor in the United States Army from 1964 until his honorable discharge in 1970. He took immense pride in his military service and in the journey that led him from Sweden to American citizenship. Though he embraced his new homeland, he never lost his deep connection to his Swedish heritage, which always remained an important part of his identity.
In 1977, Leif married Eileen Harland. Together they built a family and shared more than four decades of marriage until Eileen's passing in October 2022. Leif is survived by his son, Thor Harland; his daughters, Rhonda and Brenda Measic; his beloved grandchildren, Freyja and Henrik; and his sister, Kajsa, and brothers Jörgen, in Sweden. He was preceeded in death by his younger brother Sverre. He was a devoted father whose steadfast character, and unwavering love provided a strong foundation for his family. Nothing made him prouder than seeing his children and grandchildren grow and thrive.
Leif was a lifelong sports enthusiast with a particular passion for cross country skiing, soccer and hockey. He was a devoted fan of the Detroit Red Wings and treasured the memories he shared with family through sports, including attending the Red Wings’ 1997 Stanley Cup-clinching victory with his son. He will be remembered as a caring and stoic man, proud of his family, proud of his service, and grateful for the life he built in the country he came to call home.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026 from 4-6 pm at Sumner Funeral & Cremation Lakeside in Hendersonville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Hospital in his name.
