Paul Merritt
Guthrie
May 13, 1941 — Jul 5, 2026
Paul Merritt Guthrie, born on May 13, 1941, in Nashville, Tennessee, passed away on July 5, 2026, in Gallatin, Tennessee, at the age of 85.
Paul’s formative years were spent in Nashville, where he developed a lifelong affection for his hometown and its rich musical heritage. After completing his schooling, he went on to serve his country with pride and integrity, spending two years in the army and being stationed in Germany.
Upon returning home, Paul embarked on a long and distinguished career, dedicating thirty-two years of diligent service to the Ford Glass Plant. Outside of work, Paul was a true enthusiast of country music, holding a special fondness for the artistry of Marty Robbins, Rhonda Vincent, and many more. His love for music found its heart in Nashville’s iconic venues—the Grand Ole Opry and the Ryman Auditorium—where he often attended shows.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents Merritt Paul Guthrie and Vivian Guthrie; stepson, Denny Gilliam; his sister, Lana Arnold; and his brother, Larry Guthrie (Teena). He is survived by his beloved wife, Freda Louise Guthrie; his daughter, Janet Smith (David); his stepson, Greg Gilliam (Kay); grandchildren Hunter Dorris, Vivian Dorris, and Daniel Smith; step-grandchildren Samantha Gilliam, Jonathan Gilliam (Holly), and Kirstie Knowles (Josh); brother Larry Guthrie (Teena); several great-grandchildren; and a host of dear friends.
Services are to be determined at this time.
