Philip E. Johnstone, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on May 12, 2025, in Gallatin, Tennessee, at the age of 90. Born on October 30, 1934, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Philip led a life enriched by service, adventure, and deep family values.
A proud veteran, Philip served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War before embarking on a distinguished career as a systems engineer. Over nearly sixty years, he made significant contributions to various military contractors and aeronautical corporations, demonstrating not only technical prowess but also a commitment to excellence in his field. He received both his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in System Engineering from the University of West Florida, laying a strong educational foundation for his impactful career.
Philip was well-known for his charismatic personality and adventurous spirit. He was a mentor to many, inspiring those around him to embrace their potential. A God-fearing man and proud Catholic, Philip was a longtime parishioner at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Gallatin and a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he actively contributed to his faith community.
Philip truly exemplified the role of a family man. As a loving husband to his wife, Lisa Johnstone, he was unwavering in his support of their children, Heather Frazier (Tom) and Crystal Johnson (Josh). His commitment to his family extended to his grandchildren—Colin Frazier (Cassie), Henry Frazier, Evan Frazier, Harrison Frazier, Lucy Frazier, Shelby Sedgwick, Rachel Sedgwick, Jillian Sedgwick, Parker Johnstone, and Caleb Johnson—as well as his great-grandchildren, Carson, Scarlett, and Charles, all of whom he cherished deeply. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Fran Johnstone, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his professional and familial accomplishments, Philip had a zest for life that included a love for good wine and food, traveling, skiing, and hiking. He enjoyed exploring national parks and sharing captivating stories, reflecting his passion for history and the experiences that shaped him.
Philip is predeceased by his parents, Edwin Parker Johnstone and Lucy Reilly Johnstone, his daughter, Heidi Sedgwick; and his brothers, Doug Johnstone and Bob Johnstone. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the memories cherished by family and friends alike.
Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 11:30 A.M. from St. John Vianney Catholic Church with Father Richard Childress celebrant. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday from 10:30 A.M. until time of mass at the church.
