Dr. Richard Milton Edwards (Rich) was a devoted husband, proud father, and purely delighted in his latest role as grandfather (“Pop Pop”).

He will be remembered as a true and accomplished academic. He received his BA in Philosophy of Science from the University of Tennessee Knoxville; his MDiv from Columbia Biblical Seminary of Columbia International University (Columbia, SC); and his PhD in Theology and Religious Studies specializing in Historical and Philosophical Theology from the University of Wales.

He had an interesting and varied career working in business, pastoring churches, and teaching on the college level.

Rich was a brilliant mind and gifted teacher. Many of his students still kept in touch with him years later. His impact in academia was certainly impressive, but the impact he had on his students far surpassed a mere grading scale, as he was instrumental in leading several students to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior. 

He was an avid UT VOLS fan, lover of Southern cooking (cornbread and beans) and a great Scrabble player.

Rich had a deep love for worship music and although he couldn't clap in rhythm, that never stopped him from spiritedly singing along to his favorite songs.

Rich loved his Lord Jesus above all else. The study of the Bible and philosophical and theological contemplation were his passions, but the true pride and deepest joys of his life were his wife Cindy, his son Aaron, and his granddaughter Everly.

He is preceded in death by his father Richard Gilbert Edwards Jr., his mother Charlotte Warrick Edwards and his sister Carol Crowder. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Cindy Edwards; his son Aaron (Elizabeth) and granddaughter Everly.

Memorial contributions in Rich's honor may be made to Gideons International to help transform lives through the word of God. Memorial services are private at this time per the family's request.
