Listen to Obituary

Sarah Ann Overton Barber Wyrick, age 91 of Gallatin and formerly of Florida and Springfield, TN, passed away November 9, 2025.

Sarah was born on June 30, 1934 in Bradford, Tennessee to the late Paul and Elsie Overton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Hugh Barber and Wayne Wyrick.

She is survived by her sister, Nancy Covert (Roy); niece, Gail Cowden Hancock; nephews. Chuck Cowden (Jackie), Doug Cowden (Paula), and Jeff Cowden (Talisa); stepdaughters, Liz King (Joe) and Marti King (Joey); numerous great nieces, nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, step-grandchildren, step great-grandchildren, and countless friends.

Sarah graduated from Bradford High School and UT Martin. She worked for many years as a lab technician and also owned and operated Randolph’s Gifts and Interiors in Springfield, TN for 18 years. Sarah married Wayne Wyrick in October of 1955. After the death of Hugh Barber, Sarah and Wayne remarried in October of 1999.

Sarah and Hugh lived in Springfield for over 25 years. Hugh was a widower with three young daughters. Janet, Liz, and Marti were blessed to have Sarah come into their lives for all the things girls need. She was a girl scout leader, made prom and wedding dresses, and drove many miles in Barber Motor Company cars.

Active in the Springfield community for many years, Sarah was a member of DAR and the Wednesday Study Club. She was president of the Study Club from 1971-1973. The clubs met in the Glenn Memorial Building that desperately needed funding. In 1979, she started the Christmas Sampler in Springfield to raise money to sustain the Glenn Memorial Building. It is still an active event to this day. In 2012, after many years, she was able to get the building placed on the National Historic Registry.

She was a professional seamstress, gracious hostess, loyal friend, and devoted to her family.

Sarah was a member of Community Church in Hendersonville.

Her family wishes to thank the staff at Maple Cottage for the loving care she received. They all loved “Auntie Sarah.”

Most importantly, our gratitude is owed to Marilyn Humes who cared for Sarah over the last two years. She was more than a caregiver; she became a special friend and companion to Sarah.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Glenn Memorial Building.
