Velma Bates, a deeply loved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering faith, family devotion, and proud Oklahoma roots.

She shared a beautiful and enduring journey with her beloved husband of 52 years, Ronald "Ron" Bates, building a life filled with deep affection, shared laughter, and steadfast support for one another and their family.

Velma's home was a place of comfort, hospitality, and connection. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel seen and valued, whether through a quiet word of encouragement, a welcoming family gathering, or the supportive presence she offered to anyone in need. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of the countless people whose lives she touched.

Her greatest treasures were her family and her faith. She devoted countless hours volunteering at her children's school, supporting students, teachers, and families with a true servant's heart. At Cherokee Hills Baptist Church, she poured herself into youth ministry and church activities, investing in future generations with encouragement, wisdom, and laughter. Many who knew Velma still fondly reminisce about the unforgettable van rides to youth events and summer camps. Those journeys were filled with stories, laughter, life lessons, and the occasional shenanigan that became the stuff of legend among the youth she loved so dearly. She had a special way of turning ordinary moments into treasured memories.

Velma never knew a stranger. She was quick with a compliment, generous with her encouragement, and always had a story to tell. Her gift of conversation created instant connections and made others feel welcome, loved, and valued. Whether speaking with a lifelong friend or someone she had just met, she had a way of making everyone feel like family.

While her faith was steadfast and her heart generous, she was also known for her playful spirit. She never passed up an opportunity for a little fun, a practical joke, or a good laugh. Her sense of humor brought light to those around her and reminded everyone not to take life too seriously.

Though she will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in knowing that she has heard the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant," and that she is now at peace in her heavenly home. Her legacy lives on through the lives she touched, the friendships she nurtured, and the faith she lived so faithfully.

Velma is survived by her devoted husband, Ronald "Ron" Bates; her daughters, Crystal (Jason) Parizek and Angela (Trey) Hardy; her six cherished grandchildren; and a wide circle of loving extended family and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Geraldine Billingsley.

She leaves behind a family who adored her, friends who cherished her, and a community forever grateful for the love, faith, joy, and laughter she shared so freely.

A memorial service celebrating Velma's life will be held at a later date in Oklahoma at Sara Road Baptist Church.
