William Sloan Smith,

Known affectionately as “Willie” or “Bill” to those who knew and loved him, passed away at the age of 96. He was born January 27, 1930 to Ethel Judy Sloan Smith and Willie Ray Smith in Old Hickory, Tennessee. He was one of 9 children. He graduated from DuPont High School and married his grade school sweetheart, Betty Sue Donnell. Old Hickory, Tennessee, was his favorite place in the entire world and he had no shortage of stories about his childhood growing up there. Besides Old Hickory, he loved spending time in Panama City Beach. His favorite thing to do was visit with anyone and everyone.


He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Donnell Smith, his brothers Jack Smith, Robert Dorris “Little Bud” Smith, Doyle Smith, Ray Wauters Smith, Tom Smith, his sisters Dorothy “Dot” Smith Allison, Jessie Mai Smith Marquand, Martha Ann Smith Pippin, and his mother and father.


He leaves behind his four children Dorothy Beth Smith (Tommy) Cripps, William Clay Smith, Laurie Dee Smith, Jason Donnell (Susanne) Smith, his grandchildren Juliet (Dace) Shuck, Adam (Tiffany) Cripps, Michael Cripps, Jacob (Nikki) Smith, Tyler (Rachel) Smith, Olivia (Jacob) Kassinger, Reagan Smith, Lincoln Smith, his great grandchildren Lydia, Luke, Dace, Kyleigh, Aidan, Ciara, Kyndall, Oliver, Scarlett, Owen, Kamryn, Piper, Sloan, and his dear friend, Carolyn McClain.


He cherished the company of his family and friends and was loved by all who knew him. He created a beautiful legacy in the family he leaves behind.


Memorial Service will be Saturday, July 25 at the Old Hickory Methodist Church, 1216 Hadley Ave, Old Hickory, TN 37138. Visitation from 2 PM to 3 PM. Service will start at 3 PM.
